Colla-Bru-ation!

Since my co-editor is working closely with the good folks over at BTP, we thought it be best he take an unbiased step away from reviewing their brews (but not from drinking them!). However as a product of the Ottawa Valley – just like Square Timber – I feel that I am qualified to take this one on.

If you’ve never heard of Square Timber, the Beer Gypsy has a great spotlight article on them here. Coles Notes: they are a new brewery opening in Pembroke under Marc Bru (hence the name of this beer). I presume he entered the beer business after his blog “Bru Brahs” became wildly successful and provided the necessary start up capital for a small brewery.

Bru, the beer not the man, pours pale gold with minimal head. I should admit that this was a growlered (growled?) beer, making a judgement on the carbonation/head difficult. On the nose we have a solid backbone of light malts with bursts of  even lighter floral hoppiness pushing through. An American Pale Ale, the beer itself is very easy going and drinkable with a slight hop-forward bitterness that tugs in your checks back into a sour smile. It’s less ballsy than some of the other beers coming out of BTP but still full of flavour. Mild and smooth, it’s a great patio beer, probably best enjoyed on a dock along the Ottawa River.
